Dried Cherry Buttermilk Scones

I'm not much of a baker, but these scones are a winter breakfast treat at our house.

2 Cups all-purpose flour
1/3 Cup sugar
1-1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
6 Tablespoons butter, chilled
1/2 Cup buttermilk
1 large egg
1-1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 Cup dried cherries

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl, sift together the dry ingredients. Cut the butter into 1/2" cubes and distribute over flour mixture. With a pastry blender (I prefer to use my hands), cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir together with the buttermilk, egg and vanilla. Add to the flour mixture. Stir in the cherries. With lightly floured hands, pat the dough into a 5" diameter circle on an un-greased baking sheet. With a serrated knife, cut into 8 separate wedges (or use a sharp 2" biscuit cutter for rounds). Bake 18-20 minutes, cool for 5 minutes. Serve warm with butter, cream and jam (but they are tasty plain too).
